When I started thinking about writing this book, I never thought I’d end up visiting and revisiting some of the places mentioned in the book or that I would find a connection between the places and the cafes and my own love for literature. There were times when writing this book, I wondered what it was all leading up to – I mean, yes, Hemingway did wander around Africa a bit, Lord Byron swam the Dardanelles, enjoyed a summer in Geneva – but what of it? How would all this historic information make for an interesting read?
But I persisted. As many times as I could, I travelled to Africa and to Europe, looking for connections. lord Byron never went to Paris but Hemingway practically reinvented himself there. All this information I gathered on my travels and in the end, I found that it was not necessary to tie everything up in pretty little boxes of conventional writing and so I followed my heart and my two literary heroes. call it stalking if you will.
And before I knew it, I was caught up in a world I didn’t know existed (though mostly in my over imaginative mind) and how I loved being in that world. Often, I felt Hemingway walking beside me – so, Lord Byron lived in my heart, but that is another story – speaking to me and encouraging me to simply ‘wander’.
So I did.
I do not have all the answers. I wish I could revisit EVERY SINGLE place they’d been to – but alas that is not to be. I have found my peace and nirvana in endless cups of coffee in Hemingway’s favourite haunts and I have enjoyed a dip in the Dardanelles…
