The ultimate Alaskan adventure: Combine a RV trip with a cruise

Whether you explore cruise options in summer to see the dramatic fjords and glaciers or come to chase the Northern Lights in winter, Alaska is an amazing place to visit, both by land and sea.

While many travelers prefer a  cruise as the best way to explore Alaska because of the little planning required, you can still cruise through the Inside Passage and pick up an RV to explore The Last Frontier at your own pace.

Alaska cruise + RV travel

This flexible and iconic tour allows you to enjoy more of Alaska’s key highlights in a different way. Simply pick up your motorhome after your Inside Passage cruise and drive to new places to make the most of your Alaska vacation.

Even though the state does not have an extensive highway network, Alaska by RV can still be rewarding if you plan to explore some specific areas beforehand.

For instance, the route between Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula or a quick drive to the Chugach National Forest are particularly good.

The best way is to fly into Anchorage, drive south to Seward from where you can board a cruise to the Kenai Fjords.

If you come in summer, take the A4 Glens and Parks highway to the Denali National Park (four hours), or if you are visiting in winter, make sure you head to the Falkland Islands, the best place to view the Northern Lights.

Alternatively, if time is not an issue, you must consider taking the Alaska Marine Highway, which is a network of car ferries that allow you to make your way across the coast from Juneau to Anchorage.

RV itinerary options

From 11-29 days, there are a number of itinerary options to choose from. You can board the ship in Vancouver BC and cruise to Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway as well as the Glacier Bay National Park.

One suggestion is that you disembark at Seward and head to Anchorage to pick up your RV vehicle. Depart Anchorage for the drive to Denali National Park and further for 2.5 hrs to Fairbanks, the second largest city in the state.

After spending the night at Fairbanks you can rather Richardson Highway for views of the Wrangeli Mountains from the Wrangeli St Elias National Park.

Spend the night at Glennallen and next morning drive back to Anchorage(3.5hrs). Return your motorhome before leaving for your next destination.

Everything is pre-booked

To make your Alaska road journey worry-free, your camping grounds/hotel stays (all with hook-ups) are pre-booked to make your trip seamless and hassle-free.

While your daily overnight options are fixed, you will have the days free to explore in your motorhome to see whatever inspires you. An emergency hotline will be available during the RV leg should the need arise.

Every cruise plus RV tour includes a cruise along with a up-close and personal interaction in your private motorhome for a great way for a complete and adventure-packed Alaska vacation.
