Useful tips for a stress-free Californian road trip

Road trips are immensely popular all over the world, and especially in the USA, where as many as 53% of traveling families expect to take a road trip in any given year. Of all the exquisite road trip destinations in the country, one in particular, holds great appeal for summertime travelers from all over the world – California. With its near-perfect weather, gorgeous beaches and colorful heritage, it’s easy to understand why the Golden State tops the bucket list of many road trippers.

As enjoyable as a Californian road trip can be, it may still be somewhat daunting to plan – especially if it is your maiden cross-state voyage. Thankfully, a few basic tips are all you need to pull off a memorable road trip with family or friends.

Make sure your car is road trip-ready

Amid all the excitement of preparing for a road trip, one very important factor often gets overlooked: your car. Without a roadworthy, comfortable car, your road trip may not live up to your expectations. It is of vital importance to service your car in the weeks leading up to your trip to ensure that everything from the tires and brakes to windows and fluids is in good nick. If you’re going to be spending long periods of time in a car exploring the California coastline, you want to do so in comfort. If your vehicle is not big enough to comfortably accommodate everyone and their luggage, it may be a good idea to rent a vehicle that is more suitable. Whether you’re using your own car or a rented one, make sure that your insurance is up to date and that you’re covered for both accidents and theft.

Plan your route carefully

Although it may sound tempting to get in the car and go wherever your mood takes you, it is probably not a good idea. Instead, plan out your road trip route carefully, scheduling plenty of stops along the way. Apart from taking toilet breaks and stretching your legs, you will also want to visit some of the many superb attractions along the way. If your road trip takes you along the Pacific Coast Highway, set aside time to stop at Monterey, as well as the Julia Pfeffer Burns State Park. If you’re more of a city-dweller, Los Angeles will definitely be a dream-come-true, with its bright lights, bustling beaches and Hollywood vibe. Regardless of your route, remember to dress comfortably for the drive, and pack enough water and healthy snacks to help sustain your energy levels and curb your hunger in between stops.

Expect the unexpected

If there’s one piece of advice any seasoned road tripper will give you, it is to expect the unexpected. Regardless of how well you prepare, there are always some things that you simply do not have any control over, such as the weather, illness and breakdowns. Plan your trip in such a way that there is extra time available for coping with any incidents that may arise. Always carry a first aid kit in your car, as well as essential emergency equipment like a car jack, flashlight, road flare and warm clothing (even if California boasts warm weather almost all-year round).

A Californian road trip has all the makings of a once-in-a-lifetime experience. As long as you plan well and expect the unexpected, you are bound to create beautiful memories, even if things don’t go hundred percent according to plan.
