Albania is trending and why you should go now

Albania is a trending destination. A hot travel destination (in the modern lingo), recently enjoying fame thanks to social media and videos showing the beauty of the country. Albania has certainly benefitted through this, and I, for one, am glad for this turnaround.

My time in this beautiful country has left lasting memories and I am excited that people are opting to travel here now. Albania deserves all the fame and footfalls. I have many reasons to love this country – enough to make me return. I am highlighting a few reasons (which I hope will convince you to come here) too.

Albania boasts of several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, most of which can be reached on a day trip from the capital Tirana. Among these sites are the ancient city of Butrint, located in the south, the Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastra.

About Tirana – the capital city

 Tirana is the capital of Albania and is the economic, cultural and political hub of the country. Situated in the central west of the country (near the Adriatic Sea) it has been the capital since 1920, known for its colorful buildings, lively cafe culture, and historic sites.

  1. Skanderbeg Square

This famous landmark is the central hub of Tirana where history and modernity blend. Standing in the middle of this Square is a statue of a man on a horse; the man is Skanderbeg, whose full name was Gjergj Kastrioti, a celebrated a national hero in Albania for resisting Ottoman expansion in the 15th century. Taken hostage at four and converted to Islam, he reclaimed his Christian faith and Albanian identity when he boldly rebelled against Ottoman rule.

The Square is surrounded by –

    1. National Historical Museum: The country’s largest museum, boasting rich exhibits of history and culture.
    2. Et’hem Bey Mosque: Intricate frescoes and picturesque architecture of this historical mosque stands as a testament to Albania’s diverse religious heritage.
    3. The Opera House: The modernist architecture of this cultural landmark is amazing.
    4. Green Spaces: The landscaped area around the Square is great for strolling or picnic.
    5. Coffee Shops and Dining: Enjoy a coffee at a nearby café or savour local Albanian cuisine at one of the eateries around the square. Both are perfect for unwinding and people-watching.

   

2. Bunk’Art Museum

There are two Bunk’Art Museums – Bunk’Art 1 is located on the outskirts of Tirana and delves into the country’s socialist past. Set in a vast underground bunker built for Enver Hoxha, it explores Albania’s political climate and socialist regime through various exhibits, art installations, and historical displays.

Bunk’Art 2, in the heart of Tirana, focuses on the secret police and the overall security apparatus that operated during the communist era.

     3. Vibrant Nightlife

Tirana’s vibrant nightlife is a testament to its lively culture and youthful energy. An impressive array of bustling bars and clubs ranging from modern to chic lounges offer the visitor a great time. Many venues showcase local talent alongside international DJs, providing an eclectic mix of music genres from pop and electronic to traditional Balkan beats.

The Blloku District especially is a must visit – brimming with trendy bars, gourmet restaurants, and lively cafés, it is certain to rejuvenate your spirits.

You will be spoilt for choices in Albania. The popular Albanian Riviera runs along the Southwest coast and has some very lovely beaches. There are many Albanian beach resorts to choose from, particularly popular is Saranda, a port town with a great beach full of restaurants and bars and Ksamil, known for its clear waters.

Every turn offers a spectacular view and driving through the countryside is a treat. Mountains and greenery appear around every corner. A ferry ride across the enchanted Lake Komani is another must-have experience.

Coffee is a lifestyle and a social activity. The quality of coffee is exceptional, made from carefully selected beans that are expertly roasted and brewed to perfection. European coffee culture has heavily influenced the Albanian life.
