Sometimes it is hard to define Zimbabwe. Is it a country of game parks? Must you call it prehistoric? There have been numerous paleontology sights found in Zimbabwe and rock art found in Matobo National parks are several thousand years old. Or, is Zimbabwe merely a colonial heart of Africa?

It is difficult to judge Zimbabwe by what is known – so I’d go by what it offers the visitor. To me, it will be the country of contrasts and stunning beauty. A country of warm, friendly people and optimistic people. The vibe is that of optimism – no cut throat competition seen in parts of East Africa.

The People

I’d say Zimbabwe’s population is its real wealth. It’s extraordinarily difficult to put western standards on Africans, and it is not fair either. True, unemployment rate is high and the country is struggling to bounce back on its feet and reclaim its lost glory. but through it all, all I saw was the warm smiles of everyone I met.

The Adventure

Zimbabwe is an adventure paradise. From the stunning Victoria Falls, game drives and animal encounters, you have it all here. No matter what you do here, the memories you make are unforgettable.

Bulawayo Railway Museum

Anyone who loves trains, old or new, will, at some point in life, make their way to Bulawayo’s Railway Museum. So, I’ll make this personal. Because I love trains, that’s why.

Matobo National Park

Matobo National Park is only a half-hour drive from Bulawayo and easily one of the finest and oldest national parks. It is also the very few places in the world where you can walk up to the rhino (I mean, really close). Inside this park, at World View, is where Cecil Rhodes is buried.

Victoria Falls

It is a well-known fact that the best place to see Victoria Falls is from Zimbabwe. They are a magnificent sight that will easily take your breath away. One that the Scottish explorer David Livingstone described as “scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.” It is a quote that is inescapable when visiting the falls, both due to their beauty and the marketing.

Lion Encounter in Vic Falls

When I saw “Lion Encounter” on my itinerary, I was taken aback. What could I expect? Would I face a lion through a grille? Or would I stand right next to the King of the Jungle as fearlessly as the picture on the wall? The whole idea seemed fantastic, but I, like the rest of the group, was very curious. I was in the town of Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe with a bunch of equally happy people – all looking forward to this encounter. Finally we arrived at the centre, ready to experience this. Our dream was about to come true.

  • Political Instability:At the time of my visit, a new president had been appointed (just after elections) and things were only beginning to turn.
  • Crime: Never experienced anything like it in Zimbabwe. But like you would in any other part of the world, watch out for your belonging.
